Today I’m going to blast away at another myth about Russian women. It’s something I see on the Internet quite frequently. The myth is about Russian women wanting to get out of Russia. Often it is stated in terms of “they are desperate to leave Russia” or “they’ll do anything to get out of Russia.”

In fact, there is an element of truth involved in the myth, but it has nothing to do with how it’s portrayed by the Internet version of the myth. The Internet version portraying an attitude of desperation, “anything goes”, or “any man will do” amongst these women is total RUBBISH. The implications of the myth on the Internet are that a foreign man need not bring anything special “to the table” in order to marry a beautiful Russian woman.

So here are some facts affecting Russian women’s attitudes about going to live somewhere other than in Russia.

1. Life is not easy in Russia and while these women are NOT necessarily looking for “easy living”, the total package of often lousy weather, an economy fraught with problems and corruption, the restrictive political system, and lack of opportunity offered by Russia combine to tempt women to seek a better life elsewhere.

2. There is a reality of chauvinism in Russia which manifests in women being prevented from pursuing some professions. And also, Russian men sometimes have an attitude of expectation whereby they assume that women will naturally fulfill their role in the family while the men need not strictly fulfill their role as loyal, faithful, protectors and providers. 

3. The demographics of Russia are quite lopsided such that there are, according to Wikipedia, as many as 4,000,000 more women than men in age group 15-64. This, coupled with a significantly shorter average life span (by about 12 years) for men than for women translates simply into not enough men.

4. The lack of economic opportunity is not gender specific in that many men are also unable to find gainful employment. One huge result of this is rampant alcoholism amongst men. The alcohol results in actual unemployability and often to abuse of the women.

These issues provide some potent incentive for a woman to seek to live elsewhere. This is especially true for women of child-bearing age brought up with what amounts to a cultural imperative to get married, have children, and create a strong, healthy, loving family. Within the backdrop of the problems listed, her strong sense of family values is severely impinged upon.

BUT - - These women are NOT desperate. And they’re not stupid either. They know perfectly well that they have something to offer and they rightfully expect something in return.

A man does not have to be rich or handsome or even young to be attractive to a Russian woman. But he does have to be respectful, responsible, honest, and loving. All kinds of other positive attributes are helpful too such as kind, humorous, generous, romantic, and educated. But the first four are the “biggies.”

Note that “control freaks”, drunks, and abusers, cannot satisfy these criteria and will be rejected by a Russian woman. She’ll choose to stay in Russia rather than put up with garbage in the form of subjugation, drunkenness, or abuse.

So you can be rich or poor, handsome or plain, roughly equal aged or older, athletic or even handicapped like me. Any of these or a combination of them works for Russian women. But you have to prove to her that you have “passing grades” for the big four, respectful, responsible, honest, and loving, before she will leave Russia for you.
