Hello from Gary;
Here’s a quick note to let you know I “tweaked” our A Foreign Affair review a bit. What I did was add a negative point about their search engine. It’s not a big deal but could be frustrating if you’re not aware of it. I dated the comment as 6-24-11 on the A Foreign Affair review - - check it out to stay informed.

Russian Women - What To Talk About
On May 28, 2011 I wrote a post about what NOT to ask Russian women about. It was a short list (politics, religion, money, and deeply personal issues like health), but was perhaps surprising because of cultural differences.
So today I’m going to discuss a couple of topics that are VERY welcomed to ask about.
The first topic that Russian women enjoy talking about is family, especially if there are young children involved anywhere in her family. Sure, American women like to talk about family and kids too. But according to one Russian women friend with whom I had a lengthy discussion about this, Russian women talk about family with much more intensity and depth than American women. To quote her, Russian women family talk is “closer to soul”.
So take this as a hint men. Your asking about her family will be appreciated. But don’t try to contribute to the discussion. You are not equipped physically or culturally to contribute. So ask, yes. Then shut up and listen!
A second very safe topic is food. Russians love to talk about food. Naturally food is such a vital part of everybody’s daily life that this might seem trite. BUT, think back through centuries of Russian history. Famines, despotic rulers, wars and revolutions are sprinkled liberally throughout Russian history. All of these situations resulted in desperation for food. Russian holiday celebrations reflect this as they are often oriented to families and friends getting together to share food for days at a time.
It’s not that Russian people are obsessed with food. Rather, because of the privations they’ve suffered throughout their history, they have a strong sense of appreciation for the availability of their favorite foods.
So food is a safe topic for discussion. But here’s a caveat. You can ask WHAT your lady’s favorite foods are; but unless you totally understand Russian food (not likely) do not ask WHY she prefers one food over another. You will quite possibly get a “huh” response coupled with a questioning look. The ingredients and preparation of foods are a matter of cultural expression. And even though to you, two foods seem very similar, to a Russian, that’s not the case.
Think of it like this - - If someone asks you why you prefer B-B-Q ribs instead of B-B-Q spare ribs, you might think that person to be a little strange. It’s o.k. to be different. But being strange is not a recipe for success.
So there. Now you have lots to talk about with Russian women. Actually, it’s not nearly as restrictive as represented here. Just stay away from the taboo topics and everything else is pretty much wide open. But family and food are great openers, especially when you ask about them from the position of being a good listener.
O.K., I close for now. I’ll be back soon with more cultural goodies.
